SHIPLEY (DIV OF RHOM AND HAAS)

Marlborough, MA

On the Shipley Campus in Marlborough, LaFreniere Architects with J.M. Coull designed this new mixed use facility. The building is a stand-alone facility for a new product line of Rohm and Haas and contains ten research laboratories, clean room, and office support in addition, to the manufacturing, warehouse and process areas. As part of the master planning of the campus, the site was selected to allow for expansion of the existing facility, as well as for future expansion of either the office/laboratory or manufacturing functions of the new building. The building nestles into the hill to define the hill-top setting, and to conceal the more utilitarian manufacturing portion of the building.

The entire building is high hazard (H-2) construction and is divided by 4-hour fire walls into three seperate buildings to allow for flexibility in future high-hazard lab and manufacturing uses.

The exterior design reflects the uses of the building, and is a synthesis of the visual patterns and architectual language of other buildings on campus.
